Renee Brosch
Texas NAHRO Scholarship Recipient

A Texas Tech University School of Law graduate recently received a state award for her commitment to the provision of legal services to the poor.

The Texas Supreme Court’s Access to Justice Commission Law Student Pro Bono Award has been given to Renee Brosch, a May law graduate from Granger. The award recognizes a law student whose pro bono work has made a significant impact on the community and reflects a passion for advocating on behalf of underserved populations.

In 2008, Texas Tech’s School of Law received the inaugural Law School Commitment to Service Award, presented by the same organization.

Walt Huffman, dean of the law school, says Texas Tech continues to be a leader among Texas law schools in promoting pro bono service.

“For us to be the only law school selected for the inaugural public service award last year, and then to have Ms. Brosch recognized this year from among all the law students in Texas is really a quite special – and quite significant – combined achievement,” Huffman said. “The awards emphasize Texas Tech’s leadership in public interest law and pro bono service to those less fortunate.”

Brosch will be honored at the New Lawyer Induction Ceremony in Austin on Nov. 16, and be presented with a $2,000 stipend in recognition of her efforts. Renee Brosch graduated from the Texas Tech School of Law in May, 2009.

Fall Conference Rake Up!

TX NAHRO’S NEW TRAINING TRAILER MAKES DEBUT

The Texas Chapter of the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials (TX NAHRO) and the TX NAHRO Board of Directors are highly anticipating the debut of the new Maintenance Training Trailer. The training trailer will be unveiled at the TX NAHRO Fall Conference at the Embassy Suites Conference Center, 1001 E. McCarty Lane, San Marcos, TX 78666 at 5:30 p.m.

The training trailer is the first of its kind in Texas to be used as a portable training station for maintenance staff. The trailer will provide targeted maintenance training in an off-site environment. It will be used at public housing agencies statewide and for customized training at conferences.

James Hargrove, President and CEO of the Housing Authority of the City of Austin, says, “The training trailer provides a truly unique training opportunity. It will make training much easier and efficient by providing a hands-on approach to share across the state of Texas.”

The 33 foot mobile laboratory is constructed to simulate a functioning apartment unit. Maintenance staff will be able to take advantage of this visual classroom to practice the same electrical, plumbing, and carpentry repairs they would encounter inside of an apartment.

Texas NAHRO Scholarship Foundation, Inc.

The Housing Authority of the City of Austin (HACA) proudly sponsors the Texas NAHRO Scholarship Program serving as a vehicle of hope to individuals who have a desire to further their education, but lack the adequate financial means to accomplish this goal. We hope to reach students who may not otherwise realize their college aspirations. The scholarship recipients, in turn, serve as role models to their family, neighborhood and community.

Since 2003, HACA has funded over 135,000 to the TX NAHRO Scholarship Program to deserving high school seniors towards receiving a college degree. HACA’s hope is to continue encouraging individual achievement and self-sufficiency and to expand the funding to reach more students.

The scholarship funds are made possible by the continued success of HACA and Southwest Housing Compliance Corporation.
